About this book:
It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her.
It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.
But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true.

Alethea's review:

My "stay up all night" rating usually denotes the best of the best--the 5 star, can't-put-it-down kind of book, but in this case, I'm also using it very literally as in you might not be able to fall asleep while reading Wilder Girls. Rory Power takes the all-girls boarding school trope, plops it on a remote island off the East Coast, turns students into monsters, and surrounds it all with an ominous, foggy atmosphere. Think Annihilation meets Lord of the Flies.

Quarantined on the island, practicality is paramount. Target Practice and Gun Shift have replaced classes whose textbooks have already been burned for fuel. The girls who fill the coveted Boat Shift positions are the only ones allowed past the gate, into the woods that seem to grow fuller and closer overnight, to pick up the supplies the Navy drops off to keep them just on the edge of survival.

The girls themselves have changed, grown wild and hungry, riddled with the various and sundry effects of this mysterious disease: extra bones jutting from beneath skin that's bruising from inside their bodies, blood and pus oozing, extremities that look as if they've been dipped in ink--like the flora and fauna outside the gate, which grow large and burst black with putrefaction. At first glance, their friendships seem to be bound less through loyalty than by survival, obedience, and a weary hope that the CDC's promise of a cure for the Tox will come soon.

Hetty, Byatt, and Reese are three girls in one of the small packs formed by the surviving students. They scuffle for rations together, wash each other's hair in the meager rain water allotted for their hygiene, and keep each other warm, half-feral though they may be. Between squabbles and setbacks in the wake of Byatt's disappearance, Hetty begins to unravel the mysteries of the island and delve beneath the surface of her wary relationship with Reese. Wilder Girls is a gloomy, intriguing, slow-burning story of trust, authority, and gore. For fans of psychological thrillers, unconventional storytelling, and speculative fiction, Rory Power's debut novel is a must-read.
