Tonight Pixar treated me to a half hour special, the Toy Story of Terror. And it wasn't terrible. Probably one of the better things on tv tonight, and I have already watched it 2-3 times. I would suggest it is an interesting Pixar dissection of the horror genre as analyzed by Timothy Dalton, (Mr. Pricklepants) more so than anything actually frightening.
Jessie the cowgirl has claustrophobia. Unlike Woody's life being played with by Andy, she has issues with being kept in boxes. Toy Story of Terror starts with the toys on a road trip in the trunk of a car -- a car that resembles a Jetta Hybrid -- and Jesse accidentally gets trapped in a toolbox where she panics before being rescued by the toys. The car being driven by Bonnie (well by her mother) has car troubles and they pull into a motel for the night. And then things go Scooby Doo.
The whole special looked beautiful to me. When you look at Pixar's recent output and their earlier work, the progress that has been made in computer animation is staggering. There is so much detail and texture in every frame. I really hope that you get a chance to watch this in HD. It's possible they're reusing some of the assets from Toy Story 3 because the attention to the materials and textures on the characters are really something. The fabric of Woody's shirt. Mr. Pricklepant's hair and body. Jessie's yarn hair. Oh ... and the stucco walls. The shower grout. Mr. Jones did look like plastic but considering I think they did an excellent job simulating the look of a motel bedspread I'm not going to fault them for sometimes making characters seem cartoony.
I'm wondering what the budget was on this special because not only is the animation swell but the vocal talent was great too. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Timothy Dalton, Wallace Shawn, Don Rickles, Kristen Schaal, are back as Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Mr. Pricklepants, Rex, Mr. Potato Head and Trixie. Stephen Tobolowsky plays Ron the Motel Manager. Kate McKinnon is the Pez Cat. Carl Weathers is Combat Carl (and Combat Carl Jr).
If you didn't get a chance to watch it, the disney site suggests it will rerun on ABC Family October 19th 8pm, 20th 7:30pm; on the Disney Channel October 25th 8pm, 26th 11am; on Disney XD October 28th 7:30pm, 29th 7:00pm, Disney Junior October 30th 7:30pm, October 31st (Halloween!) 5:00pm and one last time back on the Disney Channel November 27th 9:45pm. Best to check with your local provider. I assume at some point it will be available for purchase on iTunes. In the meantime, set your DVR...
