Alethea's review:

I cannot stress these things enough:

Avatar: The Last Airbender is the finest children's animated cartoon series I've seen since the Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990s.

Do not watch the live-action debacle directed by M. Night Shyamalan--it has not even a single percent of the character, action, depth, humor, and romance of the animated series. Save yourself the trouble and just enjoy the cartoon, which are available on Netflix Instant Watch.

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise, Part 1 is a totally worthy continuation to the series--reading this graphic novel felt like a reunion with old friends who have changed a little, aged a bit, but who are ultimately the same people we know and love. The story is as exciting as the dynamic of Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino's mythology is familiar and well-orchestrated. The writer (Gene Yang) and artist team (Gurihiru) do justice to the canon.

I could and did pass on the earlier book releases for this franchise (kiddie chapter books are all well and good, but The Promise has meat on its bones) but I will definitely be first in line to pick up Part 2 in June. True Avatar fans will definitely want this set on their bookshelves! I can't wait to see if they also do these for the sequel series, Legend of Korra! I'm looking forward to a season of solid storytelling, magical powers, dangerous politics and nonstop action...
